Early Childhood Education Program

As part of the program, grandmothers received training from nurses and staff at the Ministry of Health. Training was delivered through the use of pictures and alternative materials to overcome literacy barriers. Trained grandmothers then provided support and training to mothers through group sessions and home visits to mothers of children younger than 5 years. In addition, communication materials were developed with involvement from grandmothers and broadcast through national radio. Incredible families come through ASP’s doors every day, and some choose to make an impact on the ASP community that lasts long after their children cross the graduation stage, or before a job posting moves them on to their next international adventure.

Preschools

By the time these children were 18-years old, they were five times less likely to have become lawbreakers than children who weren’t chosen for the study. Additionally, by the time these children had reached 40 years of age, they were earning $5,500 per year more on average than those who hadn’t been enrolled in a quality preschool program. They were also more likely to own their own homes and less likely to be on welfare, indicating that there are benefits to society as a whole when children receive early childhood education. The other part of the equation when it comes to early childhood education is the formal education that it receives at a young age. There can be a variety of formats in which a child receives formal education at a young age, which can vary from state to state and program to program. Educational programs may be designed specifically for children at each individual age and can be provided in settings including childcare, daycare, nursery school, preschool, and kindergarten.

Children learn through sharing toys, taking turns, and interacting with their teachers and each other. The classrooms themselves are very lively, brightly decorated with posters of the alphabet, maps, number tables and student artwork. Classrooms must be interactive and stimulating to foster an exciting learning environment. Teacher-student ratios are also closely monitored to ensure close interactions, and class sizes are kept relatively small.

Doctoral Programs

We have multiple pathways for those with limited English proficiency, including I-BEST and classes taught in Somali, Arabic, Spanish and Oromo. UNICEF reports that although breastfeeding rates remain relatively low in Djibouti, this intervention program has resulted in significant increases in breastfeeding (25% from just over 1% before 5 years). Involving parents and communities, as well as providing more formalized interventions in supporting early development and learning, has therefore become increasingly important.

This is done within that activity's zone—the distance between where the child is, and where he potentially will be. In each zone of proximal development, they build on skills and grow by learning more skills in their proximal development range. Saskatchewan Polytechnic serves students through applied learning opportunities on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 Territories and the homeland of the Métis. Learning takes place at campuses in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon and through extensive distance education opportunities.
